What do turkeys have in common with mortgages and loans? Nothing. Well not really other than the fact that this week BridgeMyCommunity.org will be helping people who need a dinner this Thanksgiving. BridgeMyCommunity.org is a website that Lisa and I started a few years back to connect people in need with those that can help them. So in a way I not only broker money each day but I also help to broker turkeys this Thanksgiving. Aside from those who might think I am a turkey (my birthday does fall on the Thanksgiving weekend) I really am excited about this coming holiday and the opportunity to be a part of helping others.
It turns out that no one is totally sure how Thanksgiving originated in Canada but Wikipedia provides one example of the explorer Martin Frobisher who had been trying to find a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean and held his Thanksgiving celebration not for harvest but in thanks for surviving the long journey from England through the perils of storms and icebergs. It would seem to me that many of the clients I have worked with in the past year should consider celebrating Thanksgiving for the same reason – surviving a long journey through the perils of financial storms and icebergs.
If you get a chance, take a look at BridgeMyCommunity.org and take a look over the Thanksgiving requests that are still outstanding. I hope that you will get the chance to be thankful this coming weekend for all that you have and have been given.
