Function versus Purpose

This past week I feel that I have come to understand the very thing that I have been wrestling with. For the past decade I have been an entrepreneur whose function has been getting people and businesses financing for various reasons. I am very good at the job and have helped others to become very good at doing the same thing. I have been able to build our business processes better than our marketplace and have developed unique service offerings not found anywhere else in our industry.   But for the same 10 years I have not been able to feel confident in the reasons behind what it is we do. Why has God allowed me to get here in my business and now that we are a few years into an economic downturn - what's the point of being in business? I am reminded of the parable where Jesus speaks of the man who left his servants varying amount of talents.  Upon his return each of the servants must give an account of what they did with the talents.  In parallel to my life - God has made me the manager over a business and I am responsible for turning the talents he has given me into more.  But why? I am coming to understand that God has put in charge of His business to help people and businesses to more.  If we can help a homeowner save money on their mortgage the savings can go one of three (3) places:  1) to their church or community through charitable giving; 2) to savings to help through a financial tough time (think famine) or 3) to invest in their future.  Similarly with a  business, if we can help get a business better use their income through better debt and financing then the business can do all of the following: 1) invest back in their business through employment or other growth strategies; 2) save for challenging financial or economic times or 3) give back to their community through charitable giving.  If our business helps people and businesses do more with their money then God can use the more for His purposes. I have been given five talents by God and  my responsibility is to turn them into ten.  I need to trust in God and the work He has put in front of me to do by doing good work everyday and running the race. What is the purpose behind your function?  God's Word gives us all of our answers and His Spirit will prompt us - we need only seek.
