Now that the Canadian election results are in, as a business owner, what does it mean? I'm an entrepreneur, 47 years old, based out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I run and own a local construction company, and for the last couple of years, have been working away at a tech startup focused on the construction labor marketplace. These election results have simply confirmed to me something that I've been thinking about over the last couple of years, which is,
"Should I move to the US? Should I open a business in the US?"
My family has spent some time in Spain over the last couple of years which has me wondering
"Should I just go and adopt the European lifestyle, less ambition, more family, more social time?"
I've decided to start recording my thoughts as I make my way through this decision. I don't know what I'm going to do yet, but what I do know for sure is that I'm not sure that Canada represents the best place for myself, my wife and my five children, who two of which are already starting to make their own life decisions, and based on these election results, stare much of the same sentiment that, based on the things they're looking to do, Canada may not be the best place. So if you're an entrepreneur, if you're a business owner, I'm going to be talking about things like, what does this mean for my faith as a Christian? What does it mean to leave a country and go somewhere else? And why would I even bother doing that? What's the purpose of being an entrepreneur, is this really just a money thing, or are there other frustrations that I experience, like bureaucracy and the slowness of getting things done, and the frustration that goes along with simply trying to create value and to be a very productive business owner?
I hope that you follow along because this is going to be something that I'm going to be very candid about, and because I know in my conversations with other Canadian business owners (a group of my pals in particular) this is something we talk about all the time, the election results have now simply confirmed that for many of us, now is probably the time to begin to think about the future and what it means for our businesses, what it means for our employees, and what it means for our families and the futures that we are all trying to create for ourselves.
If you're another Canadian business owner, maybe you are a business owner that has often thought these things in your head but has never said them out loud, and maybe this gives you an opportunity to say some of those things out loud and really talk about them with your family and the other people in your life that these kinds of decisions affect.
