I wasn’t planning on talking about politics again. I’ve said what I’ve needed to say. I’ve made peace with the fact that Canada isn’t what it used to be. But this week’s budget announcement—or lack thereof—forced my hand.
Mark Carney, Canada’s new Prime Minister, has chosen not to table a new federal budget.
Instead, he’s recycling the framework from the previous government like it’s a hand-me-down hoodie. That alone would be laughable—if it wasn’t so tragic.
I’m 47. I’m a husband. I’m a father. I own a business. I create jobs. I build value. I contribute.
But I can no longer pretend that Canada is a place where people like me are welcome.
A Country in Decline, Disguised as Stability
If you talk to a boomer, they’ll still tell you Canada is the best place on earth.
They’re not wrong. It was—for them.
But the Canada they grew up in is not the Canada my kids are inheriting. And as someone responsible for guiding my family’s future, I have to look at what’s ahead—not what used to be.
So I dug into the budget.
What I Found Made My Decision Even Easier
Here’s what this so-called “budget” includes—and why it’s a neon sign telling entrepreneurs, builders, and creators to leave:
🏗️ Build More Homes? With What Labor?
Canada’s answer to the housing crisis: throw money at it.
But the issue isn’t just supply.
It’s:
- Lack of skilled labor
- Ridiculous permitting processes
- Government inefficiency
No strategy. No execution plan. Just a headline.
📈 Capital Gains Tax Hike: From 50% to 66.67%
If you’ve ever built something valuable—like a business—you’re now being punished for your success.
This directly impacts the people who:
- Invest in the economy
- Create jobs
- Drive innovation
This is the worst possible signal to send if you want to retain entrepreneurs.
🥪 National School Food Program (with a Broken Healthcare System)
Sure, feeding kids sounds great—until you remember that our public healthcare system is buckling.
Why are we funding granola bars while ERs are overflowing?
🎓 Billions for Student Loans, But No Jobs
We’re handing out money for degrees while the job market crumbles.
Where’s the plan to connect education to employment?
Where’s the private sector incentive to hire and train youth?
(Hint: it's being taxed to death.)
🏠 RRSP Home Buyer Plan Increase
They doubled the withdrawal limit to $60,000.
Sounds great… until you realize most people don’t have that much saved, let alone enough income to invest in the first place.
💸 Personal Income Tax Drop: 1%
A 1% cut for the middle class. That’s about $75 a month.
Meanwhile, inflation is torching buying power, housing is out of reach, and the cost of basic goods keeps climbing.
It’s Not Just Broken—It’s Designed That Way
This isn’t just incompetence.
This is systemic misalignment.
Private sector value creators like me are disincentivized.
Public sector bloat is rewarded.
Innovation? Ignored.
Productivity? Declining.
Ownership? Taxed into oblivion.
So I ask again: Why stay?
I’m Not Leaving Because I Hate Canada
I’m leaving because I love my family.
Because I love building.
Because I believe in creating momentum, not clinging to nostalgia.
And the truth is, other countries are getting it right:
- 🇪🇸 Spain already took its hit. It’s rebuilding. It’s humble. It’s open to reinvention.
- 🇺🇸 The U.S. is accelerating into a new golden era. It’s rewarding effort. It’s scaling optimism.
