This week was chaos—but the good kind.
We moved bookkeeping back to Canada, wrangled a credit card disaster that a “banking upgrade” caused, reconciled our accounts, and worked on E-2 visa plans for the U.S. and digital nomad documentation for Spain.
But what’s really on my mind today is this:
The economy is changing. Again. And most entrepreneurs are pretending it isn’t.
Canada’s Hiring Is Stalling. Again.
New Canadian government reports confirm what many of us already feel:
- Hiring has slowed in retail, construction, healthcare, and education
- Wages are rising slightly, but jobs aren’t following
- Capital investment is frozen while businesses “wait and see”
My read as a business owner? Simple:
This is the new game on the field.
If You’re Waiting for Normal, You’ve Already Lost
You might be holding off:
- Waiting for inflation to slow
- Waiting for tariffs to settle
- Waiting for hiring to become “safe” again
But guess what?
This is normal now.
And pretending otherwise means you’re reacting, not building.
That’s how businesses die. Slowly. Then all at once.
The Real-World Math We’re Living By
In our own business:
- We’ve replaced a full-time estimating role with ChatGPT for $20/month
- We’re paying the same overseas team member more to do higher value work
- We’re locking in labor costs by investing in a partner’s labor startup
- We’ve moved bookkeeping onshore to free up management time
- We’re automating admin to protect shrinking margins
Because margins will shrink. And when they do, the only question is:
Will you already be ready—or will you still be waiting to make a move?
Take the Punch Now—or Live in Fear of It
Too many business owners are flinching.
They know a slowdown is coming.
They feel the friction in capital spending.
They see their competitors freezing up.
But instead of acting, they delay.
I’ve lived through this before:
- 9/11 changed air travel permanently
- The 2008 crisis changed how banks lend
- COVID changed everything—forever
In each case, those who adapted fast? They thrived.
Those who hesitated? Buried.
You don’t win by waiting. You win by absorbing the first punch, pivoting, and staying in the fight.
Here’s the Playbook That’s Working for Us
If you're looking for how to respond—not react—try this:
✅ Shift low-value work to AI
Offload repetitive admin.
Train your team on tools like ChatGPT.
Free up bandwidth for higher-level thinking.
✅ Invest in partnerships, not platforms
Instead of software bloat, we’re investing in people—like backing a new labor company that aligns with our mission.
✅ Control your largest cost center
For us, that’s labor. So we didn’t just source cheaper labor—we co-built the infrastructure to support it.
✅ Anticipate inflation—without passing it on (yet)
Prices will go up. But not yet. Until they do, protect margin through efficiency.
✅ Stop fantasizing about “after the storm”
There is no after. This is the storm. And it’s where real operators prove themselves.
You Are the Variable That Matters Most
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:
The environment will never be perfect. It will always be hard. So what are you building anyway?
Because if your product or service is needed…
If it creates value in the world…
If you believe in what you do…
Then adapt. Move fast. Take the punch. And keep going.
